Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics (CHEP) is a major series of international conferences for physicists and computing professionals from the High Energy and Nuclear Physics community, Computer Science and Information Technology.
The CHEP conference provides an international forum to exchange information on computing experience and needs for the community, and to review recent, ongoing, and future activities.
CHEP conferences are held in 18-month intervals, alternating between Europe, North America and other parts of the world. The next one will be held in Mumbai, India in February 2006 with the following one in Victoria, Canada in September 2007.
Previous CHEP conferences have been held in Interlaken, Switzerland (2004), San Diego, California (2003), Beijing, China (2001), Padova, Italy (2000), Chicago, Illinois (1998), Berlin, Germany (1997), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1995), San Francisco, California (1994), Annecy, France (1992) and Tsukuba, Japan (1991). The scientific programme of CHEP07 conference in Victoria will consist of a plenary session of invited oral presentations, a number of parallel sessions comprising oral and poster presentations, and an industrial exhibition. It is expected that 500 researchers from around the world will attend CHEP07.
Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, Canada, is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. Vancouver Island has regular ferry connections to Vancouver and Washington State in the US, and Victoria is served by an International Airport 30 minutes from the city centre. Many international airlines have flights from Vancouver and Seattle. Hourly commuter flights arrive from Vancouver (15 minute flight) and every 2-3 hours from Seattle (30 minute flight).

CHEP07 will have plenary and parallel sessions during the weeklong conference. The plenary presentations will focus on topical issues in HEP computing as well as exploring new technologies for the future. The parallel sessions will be based on contributions submitted by the HEP community and will focus on the following areas:
• Online Computing
• Event Processing
• Software Components, Tools and Databases
• Software Tools and Information Systems
• Computing Facilities, Production Grids and Networking
• Grid Middleware and Tools
• Distributed Data Analysis and Information Management
• Collaborative Initiatives with Other Sciences
• Collaborative Tools
The Computing in High Energy Physics Conference in Victoria is expected to attract 500 people from around the world based on the participation in the previous conferences. We expect that 90% of the participants will be from outside of Canada with half of the international participants coming from the United States and the other half from Europe and Asia. Many of the delegates will be associated with Tier-1 and Tier-2 computing centres taking part in the WLCG project.
A majority of the participants will be Ph.D. physicists (faculty, research scientists and postdoctoral fellows) who are considered computing experts in High Energy Physics. The expertise of the participants will be in areas such as cluster management, large-scale storage, high-speed networks and grid computing.
Decision makers, researchers and IT professionals from the major HEP Laboratories (such as CERN, Fermilab, SLAC) and from the Grid projects (such as Open Science Grid, UK E-Science Project and EGEE) are expected to attend CHEP07.
